Tooth extraction is the removal of a tooth from its socket in the bone. While preserving natural teeth is always our priority, sometimes extraction is necessary to protect your overall oral health. At Dr. Sidhu’s Dental Clinic, Vasant Kunj, we perform extractions with the utmost care, using modern techniques and anaesthesia to ensure your comfort throughout the procedure.
We offer both simple extractions (for visible teeth) and surgical extractions (for teeth that are broken, impacted, or not fully erupted). Every extraction is performed with precision, attention to detail, and a focus on your comfort and recovery.
You may need a tooth extraction if:
Severe Tooth Decay: When a cavity is so extensive that it cannot be restored with a filling or crown
Gum Disease (Periodontitis): Advanced infection causing loose teeth
Impacted Teeth: Teeth that cannot erupt properly (most commonly wisdom teeth)
Overcrowding: Preparation for orthodontic treatment to create space
Fractured or Broken Teeth: When the tooth is damaged beyond repair
Infection or Abscess: When a root canal is not possible or has failed
Radiation Therapy: Extraction of teeth in the radiation field for head and neck cancer treatment
Pre-prosthetic Preparation: Removal of teeth to make room for dentures
| Type | Description |
|---|---|
| Simple Extraction | Removes visible teeth with specialized instruments; performed under local anaesthesia |
| Surgical Extraction | Removes teeth that are broken, impacted, or not fully erupted; may involve making a small incision in the gum |
| Wisdom Tooth Extraction | Removal of one or more wisdom teeth that are impacted, infected, or causing problems |
| Paediatric Extraction | Safe removal of primary (baby) teeth that are not falling out naturally |
Step 1: Consultation & Examination
Your dentist will examine the tooth, take digital X-rays, and discuss your medical history to ensure a safe procedure.
Step 2: Anaesthesia
Local anaesthesia is administered to numb the area, ensuring you feel no pain during the procedure. Sedation options are available for anxious patients.
Step 3: Tooth Removal
For simple extractions, the tooth is gently loosened and removed using specialized instruments. For surgical extractions, a small incision may be made in the gum to access the tooth.
Step 4: Post-Extraction Care
You will receive detailed aftercare instructions. Gauze is placed to control bleeding, and you will be advised on pain management, diet, and oral hygiene during healing.
Step 5: Follow-Up
We schedule a follow-up visit to monitor healing and discuss replacement options if needed (implants, bridges, or dentures).
To ensure smooth healing after your extraction:
Bite on Gauze: Keep gauze in place for 30-60 minutes to control bleeding
Apply Ice Packs: Apply ice to the outside of your cheek for 10-15 minutes at a time during the first 24 hours
Take Medications: Use pain relievers and any prescribed antibiotics as directed
Avoid Rinsing: Do not rinse your mouth vigorously for 24 hours
Avoid Straws: Do not drink through a straw for at least 24 hours
Eat Soft Foods: Start with a soft diet and gradually introduce solid foods as healing progresses
Maintain Oral Hygiene: Avoid brushing the extraction site for 24 hours; gently rinse with warm salt water after 24 hours
Avoid Smoking & Alcohol: Both can interfere with healing
Take Rest: Avoid strenuous activity for 24-48 hours
After a tooth is extracted, it is important to consider replacement options to prevent shifting of adjacent teeth and maintain oral function:
Dental Implants: Permanent replacement with a natural-looking crown
Dental Bridges: Fixed prosthetic anchored to adjacent teeth
Removable Partial Dentures: Replace multiple missing teeth
Complete Dentures: For patients who have lost all teeth
No. The procedure is performed under local anaesthesia to ensure you feel no pain. You may experience some mild discomfort or soreness after the anaesthesia wears off, which can be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers.
Simple extractions typically take 20-30 minutes. Surgical extractions may take 30-60 minutes depending on the complexity.
Healing of the gum tissue typically takes 1-2 weeks. Complete bone healing may take several months. Following post-operative instructions carefully will promote faster healing.
Most patients can return to work the next day. However, you may want to take it easy for 24-48 hours.
Avoid hard foods, spicy foods, alcohol, smoking, and using straws for at least 24 hours. Avoid brushing the extraction site and strenuous activity.
Our goal is to provide friendly, caring dentistry and highest level of general, cosmetic, and specialist dental treatments.
